Hotel Palmas de Cortez

Considering this day was going to be a travel day, we had a leisurely morning around the pool, breakfast, and a meeting about the past, present, and future, packed and hopped in the rental cars for Hotel Palmas De Cortez about two and one half hours away. I want to share a quick word about rental cars and ‘TAPAZ!’ Tapaz are speed bumps in the road and some are bigger than others. I advise anyone heading to Mexico to pay special attention to the clearance of any vehicle to be rented, especially vans. It is not uncommon to tear off a muffler or more on a tapaz and end up paying a lot more for the rental car than previously anticipated. Always get insurance.
We left Cabo San Lucas around mid-day and headed back towards the airport and another hour and a half past it with one brief stop at the Tropic of Cancer pull out where someone is wisely building a rest area with shops and probably a restaurant. The whole area was green due to a recent hurricane.
Soon after we crossed over we could see the blue waters of the Sea of Cortez and a colony of fishing boats anchored up near our hotel.
Hotel Palmas De Cortez is a beautiful hotel on the East Cape about half way to La Paz with all the amenities and owned by the Van Wormer Resort group. It has been a hotel in a morphing state for a long time attracting guests for R & R by the pool, fishing, kite surfing among a stack of other reasons. Website: www.vanwormerresorts.com.
At this time of the year many boats are preparing to pull out of the water and give way to the building wind and the voracious kite surfers migrating in from all over the world.
After everyone got situated in their rooms the afternoon was free to explore town, beach and swim up bar in the infinity pool. Everyone was excited to go fishing for Marlin, Tuna, Bonita, Rooster fish, Dorado and Pelicans tomorrow. In the meantime we watched a wedding on the beach.  We ate dinner away from the hotel the first night, El Barrilito Restaurante. The chef, Francisco Zepeda Leyva cooked up a storm of seafood and his lovely daughter was our waitress. Between the two of them, the service and the food are worth mentioning. If you feel like bringing in your freshly caught fish, Francisco can handle it. elbarrlitos@hotmail.com. http://davidcdagley.com/
