As the alumni arrived we all met by the pool and made introductions and off we went out with the sunset into downtown Cabo San Lucas. I lost my costumed friends almost immediately but I found a great place to eat and enjoy the parade of children coming and going with their pumpkin buckets half full of candy and coins. Burrito Surf Shop was the perfect early evening stop for a quick bite and a beer. The two North American ladies running the place are beautiful, engaging and attentive. Surf boards hang from the walls or suspend from the ceiling over tables and a sitting area with a big screen t.v. There were lots of regulars there when I passed was about to pass by when a biker picked up a child or two and took pictures with them.
The menu was basic and everything I saw go out was large portions with ingredients of choice. I ordered a chicken burrito and the woman put chicken on the grill. Nothing is pre-cooked. (Burritos, Burrito Bowls, Tacos, Quesadillas, y Ensaladas). Bethany Barba, manager.
I moved out into the night and into the corridors of competing night club noise. I was within a block of the Giggling Marlin, Jungle Room, Hard Rock Café, and Cabo Wabo, and the Pink Night Club among others. The streets were still filling up with people and police sirens seemed to be a part of the street music. It was a great night for people watching.
I walked past the crashed car exhibition and it had been written on and remained a reminder of the things we do while driving.
The night was rather short for me and returned to the Mar de Cortez bar and see if any of our group had returned. The pool court yard was sedate except for the bar where margaritas and beer poor like water. The hotel itself was very reasonably priced, $60 for a double room, $100 for a four bed room, and a little extra for the pool side rooms. The guests I had met during the day were of all walks of life, but primarily Californian. We all talked of travels, tsunamis, and the amenities of Mexico.
The next day, as some went north to ride ATVs a few of us hung around the pool, read books, played on computers, sat in the sun, swam, and found intermittent relief from the heat in our air-con rooms. It was exactly what I needed, I needed to stop moving and just relax the day away. I took a walk through town down to the harbor and ended at The Corner Bar and had a fabulous Margarita and caught a glimpse of Thursday night football.
By early evening a restaurant had been chosen, Missiones De Kino, right around the corner. This restaurant has great ambiance, a little more intimacy than most and really great food. I had a shrimp salad and crab cakes.
