After a good day of fishing a group of us went north by car about five miles and headed down to the beach for some animal awareness and to watch a group of hatched baby turtles paddle across the beach and into the surf. The baby turtles head’s bob in the chop just past the six inch beach break. The sun is setting and a group has gathered for the release of the turtles. Group Tortuguer, Los Barriles, BCS. Find them on Facebook. Two brothers, among others, have gotten together, built some nest enclosures, and cruise the beach for the unmistakable track of a female turtle heading up the beach to dig a nest and lay her eggs. After she has done her business the eggs are collected and brought within the enclosure, replaced in the sand and labeled and dated. This allows for rough estimate of hatching.
Basically one percent of the baby turtles live long enough to return to beach and lay eggs or fertilize a female so it’s important to keep the numbers up and protected from car traffic on the beach, dogs, and natural predators during the incubation period.
Just watching the turtles swim off into dangerous waters is pretty crazy. 10 meters from shore the water boils with fish eating baby turtles and frigates fly over head and the pelicans are coming. The sun is setting. Let’s hope that under cover of darkness most of these baby turtles live to 'sea' another day.
