We dropped Jason off at Tagot Nusa Retreat and Scarecrows left breakwhere he is to stay for another week or so and us on our way to our final day of surfing up at a vicinity wave spot called ‘Playgrounds’. It is sort of on our way back to Padang and the airport for some. The waves were big and meaty and fast. There was a short down pour that dropped the temperature from 97.4 in the shade to 85. I couldn't see much from where the boat anchored.

The rain felt cold which means that we have all acclimatized to the blistering temps in the sun. The really odd thing to see during the first few days was locals wearing down jackets or poly-fill puff jackets in the mid morning while we all wore shorts. Anyway, the day was hot for the most part and we left the area around 4 pm. As we left we realized that we were out of beer. DK and Captain Candra decided to go by a surf break called Hideaways with a surf camp there owned partly by another Cal Poly graduate Mr. Kristy. I got in a skiff with two of the crew and we went ashore and met Paul, who owns another surf camp and boats and Brendon (sp?) who graduated from Cal Poly Pamona with a mechanical engineering degree; great guy and very helpful. He showed me through Wave Park surf camp. http://www.wavepark.com/

There are 21 different waves to surf within 30 minutes by speed boat, which they have a few. Brendon got us the beers we needed for our celebratory ride back to Padang. Wave Park made the trip complete for us with their generosity. They had just put in a few new bungalows and the beach was spotless. I like the fact that they were in the middle of any swell from any direction and also the wind. With 21 surf spots around your bungalow, how can you lose?

Our final sunset was slipping over the Mentawai Islands with a beer in hand; all smiles and stories, and one angry Gasser chasing us on his surf board.

We had a smooth crossing and slept in until around four in the morning. The Californians took off first to the airport and then the Aussies took off after mid day. We two Alaskans, Marcus Connel and I joined up with DK and his beautiful woman Ayen. They invited us on a road trip up to Bukittinggi, a mountain village about 80 kilometers north in the hills. Stay tuned and tweet all you like. Thank you and Salamat Tingal to those who are staying and Salamat Jalan to those who are leaving the Nusantara Surf Charter and its crew. www.nusantarasurfchaters.com. And see you later to old and new friends.

The road up to Bukittinggi was crazy fun and adventure travel.
