Seward Chili Roast

Seward Chili Roast
The forecast called for rain on September 1st. The annual chili roast began at noon and rolled on until all the chilies were roasted, divided and given to those who ordered them. I split a 40 lb. with a friend. The chili roast originally began in the backyard of the Pit Bar but when the owners past on, the chili roast moved to a spacious residence and generous hosts.
Friends are invited to bring food and drink. Besides the keg, Tequila and guacamole are popular among a plethora of other finger foods such as Moose enchiladas, hot wings, chili rellenos, salmon dip, salads, you name it.
The process of roasting approximately 600 lbs. chilies is not necessarily a quick task, but with a stack of friends and family, everyone wants to help to some degree. Whether a person is cracking freezer bags, grouping chilies into 6 per bag, washing the roasted skins off in ice, getting ice, roasting chilies, or melting ice off the propane bottle in a very unorthodox way, making margaritas, timing each roast, it’s a group effort with people willing to take over after a shot or a margarita.
I’ve been to quite a few of these chili roasts and its odd, most of us live in the same town but I only see some people at the chili roast and nowhere else in town. It’s a reunion and a labor of love and chilies. Even the intermittent rain couldn't stop this process. And the intermittent sun brought smiles.  http://www.davidcdagley.com/
