After a swim in the Nuansa Maninjau Resort pool, followed by a sauna and dinner we all met up in the billiard room and played pool for a few hours. http://www.nuansamaninjau.com/The views and sunset were beautiful and there were no bugs. Come to think of it, there hadn’t really been any on the whole trip. e-mail: info@nuansamaninjau.com.

Getting up at a leisurely hour we all hopped in the car and headed down the 44 hairpin turns to Maninjau Lake. The hairpin turns are marked by a big sign and number painted on it. At the top of the decent a sign with a big 44 stood and DK started counting backwards in Hasa.

Picturesque homes and terraced rice paddies pose by the side of the road as we head down the mountain side.

Some incredible vistas with small restaurants and trinket shops stuck out of the hill side and handed out photo ops like candy - of the valley below and what flew above you.

Maninjau Lake only 100 feet deep, so I’m told, and a surplus of fresh water fish farms. I didn’t see anyone swimming in it. The lake is dammed up at one spot where the water can flow out of a deep gorge to the river below and eventually the ocean. Many locals fish here.

While having lunch at Waterfront Zalino we met the owner, Mr. Porcupine, also of Porcupine Trekking and Pig Hunting; he asked if we were staying long and offered to take us wild boar hunting with spears, knives and dogs. Apparently it’s a steady business and he runs charters if that kind of thing interests you. At the moment I was interested in my deer satay and mie goring special.

We finished our lunch and headed back up the road. Along the way we ran into a band of long tail monkeys which sat by the road.

We were back in the pool for a relaxing late afternoon swim. Mark and I somewhat packed our stuff and planned our transport to Bukit Lawang where we were going to go trekking into the jungle and check out the Orangutans living in the area. Thankfully, DK’s friend Ayen was well known all over the island and she set us up with plane and van transport from the Padang airport to Medan and on. More adventure travel coming in the jungles of north eastern Sumatra.
